Under our present system, a man or woman with a life threatening medical problem can get medical care at almost any hospital whether or not that individual has the means to pay for the treatment.

The medical care isn’t necessarily free. The patient will be billed for the medical intervention. However If the patient does not pay for the treatment, the paying customers bills have to be (and are) increased to make up the difference.

Those of us who have health care insurance are paying for the uninsured already. Hospitals aren’t mandated to give uninsured patients preventative care. They are mandated to give expensive life-saving treatments (in many instances). This means that we may be paying a lot more than we should.

If we all had health insurance, inexpensive preventative care treatments would be more commonplace and expensive life-saving treatments might be less so.

Also, a healthier population is a more productive population. A populace that benefits from more preventative care procedures misses fewer days of work each year. Healthier people take fewer sick days. They are less likely to become disabled. They earn more. They pay more in taxes.

If we allow our healthy twenty year olds to opt out of the medical-care insurance system, many of them will become fifty-year old heart patients who will get treatment from our system but who have never paid into it. Unless we are going to deny them treatment when they desperately need it, we should get them to pay their fair share.

Few of us want to live in a society where desperately ill people who are without insurance get forcibly removed from our hospitals and left in the streets to die. Can you imagine the images on the nightly news if that were allowed to happen? Can you imagine walking through these poor people on your way to get to your doctor?

Whether it is right or wrong, we are required to pay for many things that we as individuals, don’t need. Even though you may not drive, part of your taxes pays for roads and bridges. Part of your childless neighbors taxes pay for schools.

If you choose not to pay the part of your taxes that goes toward your local police force, would they be allowed not to investigate your murder or help you if you were being robbed? If you never got robbed or murdered should you get a rebate on your taxes? Of course not.

Using the same logic, a person who might have a heart attack or a major bike accident lawyer should pay an equitable piece of the cost whether or not he or she ever needs significant treatment.

If we are not going to employ armed guards in our hospital emergency rooms to remove the bleeding would be patients who haven’t paid into our system, we need to get every citizen to pay into the system. Obligatory medical insurance or tax funded universal health care insurance is the only fair way.

Orthomolecular nutrition analyzes cell behavior, the manner in which the cell absorbs nutrients and uses this information to determine what the best diet for health and physical maintenance is. In general, when we talk about nutrition whenever we think about what we really like to taste and eat. However, an increasing percentage of the population believes that nutrition entails providing the body the necessary nutrients to stay healthy.

We tend not to worry about too much fat in order to care for the heart and arteries, a little sugar for fear of tooth decay and obesity, not having too much salt for fear of high blood pressure and can even opt for foods that contain the fiber we always welcome in out diets. Nutrition tends to relate more with the physical health of our organs and tissues. The new concept of cellular nutrition will help us understand how our health can improve from an orthomolecular level. Ultimately, the health of our cells depends largely on what we eat through diet and supplementation. For many years, principally in England, Germany and the United States, orthomolecular nutrition has emerged as a new concept in nutrition that encompasses not only diet, but also nutritional supplements, which are considered necessary for a high percentage of the population.

This new concept of nutrition is called orthomolecular nutrition. Orthomolecular nutrition relies on the fact that all tissues have a structure that depends on cooperation between different cell types, and therefore it is essential to the health of tissues and organs that the cells are equally as healthy. After ingestion of food takes place, some metabolic processes of digestion, absorption and assimilation, end with the utilization of a wide range of nutrients through the cell wall to be used by the cell. Orthomolecular nutrition analyzes cell behavior, the manner in which the cell absorbs nutrients and uses them to determine what diet is best for the maintenance of cellular health and disease prevention. Cellular nutrition is then defined as the supply of nutrients to the body cells and the need for energy and maintenance of their structure and functions. Of course, the body’s cells need the same nutrients that have been regarded as essential, so what distinguishes orthomolecular nutrition from other forms of nutrition is the providing for the proper functioning of cells.

That is, not only is it necessary that the diet isn?t deficient in any nutrient, but also, that it does not contain substances that can unbalance our cell behavior, damaging the ability to absorb and utilize essential nutrients. The cell is wrapped in a thin membrane composed mainly of fat, and within it are protein molecules that perform specialized functions. The cell membrane has a vital role because it controls what can or can not pass into cells.

The interior is divided into cellular compartments, including the nucleus; inside the nucleus is the genetic material that carries all the information necessary for the structure and functioning of the cell. Under powerful microscopy, one can see the cell structure and its operation affected by a deficiency of minerals and vitamins as well as an excess of chemicals like toxins, sodium, calcium and sugar. Nutrient deficiency slows cell functions and subtracts energy from the cell. Excess toxins inhibit and destroy enzymes, impair cellular energy production and the cell unable to synthesize proteins. Some toxins affect genetic material and can damage the cell wall. The sodium and sugar in excess is also toxic in nature and affect the cell in the same way as do the toxins.
EXT. COM Nutrition education should be top of the list of education topics addressed in healthcare today

There is clearly a lack of both medical education and leadership by governmental agencies on nutritional education. While health associations such as the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, and the American Heart Association all claim that up to 70 percent of common diseases are avoidable through proper nutrition, the message simply has not made it down to the medical colleges, nor to the general public. While the internet is a large source for information for many patients, they still turn to their doctor for advice. But doctors are not apt to give out nutritional advice when they have only taken a class or two when in medical school. The lack of nutritional education is hurting us all.

Cost of a Poor Education

Today more than 60 percent of the population of the United States is considered overweight. This number has exploded in the last 30 years, when only 10 to 20 percent of the population was considered overweight. Likewise, other diseases have also increased: Diabetes, which used to be less than one percent of the population is now approaching 15 percent. Heart disease is now one of the most common killers of women. Cancer has overtaken heart disease as the number one killer and a new report out by the World Health Organization says that cancer will be the number one world-wide killer by 2010. The cost of poor nutritional information extracts a heavy toll on our health.

Nutrition

The foods that we eat become the basic building blocks of our bodies. The better nutrition we put in our bodies, the better our bodies function and the less disease we are likely to encounter. A balanced and healthy diet means more than simply avoiding disease, a healthy diet has been shown to: Increase energy and vitality of life. Help you to maintain a healthy weight. Boost your immune system. Keep people active throughout their lives Protect mental capabilities.

Nutrition Education

Healthcare needs to take a step forward and understand that preventing a disease is far easier than trying to treat one. Good nutrition should start at the medical doctor?s office, but should also be a part of the education of our children and adults. There is a missed opportunity in not educating ourselves and our doctors to the importance of proper nutrition.

Proper nutrition is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle before and after a cancer diagnosis. Nutrition education and assistance programs, therefore, should be funded and implemented immediately at both a national and local level.

Am J Med Genet A. 2010 Sep 2; Ahmad Z, Zackai E, Medne L, Garg A
Mandibuloacral dysplasia (MAD) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypoplasia of the mandible and clavicles, acro-osteolysis, and lipodystrophy due to mutations in LMNA or ZMPSTE24. Only six MAD patients are reported so far with ZMPSTE24 mutations and limited phenotypic data are available for them. Here, we report on two brothers (4 years and 9-month old) with early onset MAD due to ZMPSTE24 mutations in whom thin skin was noted as early as 5 months of age. Both had micrognathia, mottled hyperpigmentation, and enlarged fontanelles but little evidence of lipodystrophy. There was no delay of mental development. The older brother had small pinched nose, short clavicles, acro-osteolysis, stunted growth, joint stiffness, and repeated fractures. There was no evidence of renal disease. Both patients were compound heterozygotes harboring a previously reported missense ZMPSTE24 mutation, p.Pro248Leu, and a novel null mutation, p.Trp450stop. These patients and the review of literature reveal that compared to MAD patients with LMNA mutations, those with ZMPSTE24 mutations develop manifestations earlier in life. Other distinguishing features in MAD due to ZMPSTE24 mutations may include premature birth, renal disease, calcified skin nodules, and lack of acanthosis nigricans. We conclude that in patients with MAD due to ZMPSTE24 mutations, the onset of disease manifestations such as thin skin and micrognathia occurs as early as 5 months of age. In these patients, skeletal phenotype presents earlier whereas lipodystrophy and renal disease may occur later in life. (c) 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

J Sci Food Agric. 2010 Sep 2; Patra AK, Saxena J
Tannins (hydrolysable and condensed tannin) are polyphenolic polymers of relatively high molecular weight with the capacity to form complexes mainly with proteins due to the presence of a large number of phenolic hydroxyl groups. They are widely distributed in nutritionally important forage trees, shrubs and legumes, cereals and grains, which are considered as anti-nutritional compounds due to their adverse effects on intake and animal performance. However, tannins have been recognised to modulate rumen fermentation favourably such as reducing protein degradation in the rumen, prevention of bloat, inhibition of methanogenesis and increasing conjugated linoleic acid concentrations in ruminant-derived foods. The inclusion of tannins in diets has been shown to improve body weight and wool growth, milk yields and reproductive performance. However, the beneficial effects on rumen modulation and animal performance have not been consistently observed. This review discusses the effects of tannins on nitrogen metabolism in the rumen and intestine, and microbial populations (bacteria, protozoa, fungi and archaea), metabolism of tannins, microbial tolerance mechanisms to tannins, inhibition of methanogenesis, ruminal biohydrogenation processes and performance of animals. The discrepancies of responses of tannins among different studies are attributed to the different chemical structures (degree of polymerisation, procyanidins to propdelphinidins, stereochemistry and C–C bonding) and concentrations of tannins, and type of diets. An establishment of structure-activity relationship would be required to explain differences among studies and obtain consistent beneficial tannin effects.
The agreement will enable Fresenius Medical Care to initiate activities in a key Middle Eastern market. It also is aimed as a key aspect of both groups’ strategy to expand their business in the region. Both entities have agreed not to disclose financial details of the transaction under discussion.

“Initiating patient care operations in the Middle East has been a defined path in our overall growth strategy, and we are convinced that the contract with SEHA is an excellent basis for the growth of Fresenius Medical Care in this region. The contract will allow our company to significantly strengthen its sales and distribution network and expand our presence in this key market,” said Fresenius Medical Care’s Dr. Emanuele Gatti, CEO for Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, managing director and chairman of SEHA, commented, “We are delighted to have engaged Fresenius Medical Care as our exclusive partner in the management of our renal patients. We look forward to benefiting from the knowledge and skills of the leader in this sector in building a world-class patient care organization that delivers on its promise of high-quality health care services for the people. We also look forward to pursuing other development activities in the region with our partner Fresenius Medical Care.”

Dr. Ali Abdulkareem Al Obaidli, chief of clinical affairs for SEHA and a practicing renal specialist, added, “This is good news for Abu Dhabi. Bringing in the world’s best providers and managers is part of our business strategy. This partnership will result in improved service levels and better outcomes for our dialysis patients.”

Fresenius Medical Care is the world’s largest integrated provider of products and services for individuals undergoing dialysis because of chronic kidney failure, a condition that affects more than 1.89 million individuals worldwide. Through its network of 2,599 dialysis clinics in North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Africa, Fresenius Medical Care provides dialysis treatment to 202,414 patients around the globe. Fresenius Medical Care also is the world’s leading provider of dialysis products such as hemodialysis machines, dialyzers and related disposable products.
WASHINGTON — More medical care won’t necessarily make you healthier — it may make you sicker. It’s an idea that technology-loving Americans find hard to believe.”

Anywhere from one-fifth to nearly one-third of the tests and treatments we get are estimated to be unnecessary, and avoidable care is costly in more ways than the bill: It may lead to dangerous side effects…
